Tyler, The Creator Thinks His VMA Rivals ‘Suck’

‘If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele’s,’ Tyler tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Tyler, the Creator bites his tongue for no one. Some call him evil, others, unbelievable. So when asked about his feelings on his 2011 MTV VMA Video of the Year nomination, Tyler simply spoke his mind. “I’m really excited, shout out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele‘s,” he told MTV News.

The Odd Future standout’s self-directed “Yonkers” video is up against Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Beastie Boys’ “Make Some Noise,” Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” and Katy Perry‘s “Firework.” The “Yonkers” clip, which was uploaded to the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’s YouTube page back in February, has since racked up 15 million views. Most noted for the scene in which the rapper hangs himself in the end, the “Yonkers” video has become one of the most talked about and debated works of the year. It earned Tyler a Best New Artist nom as well.

While the Cali rapper/producer/director is more respectful of his fellow Best New Artist nominees, he still wants to win that one too. Up against indie poppers Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”), Big Sean (“My Last”), Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”) and Wiz Khalifa (“Black and Yellow”), Tyler will let his guard down just a bit in this category. “The Best New Artist thing, that’s cool. Wiz is a really good dude and I’ve been a fan of his music, so if he wins I’ll be pretty excited. I wanna win that for sure, but Wiz is awesome, I’ve been listening to him since ’08,” he said. “Even Kreayshawn, she’s cool. So if she wins that too, I’ll be pretty stoked. But you know, I wanna win, I’m just gonna keep it 100.”

Snagging a VMA has been a goal of the “Sandwitches” MC for months. He has been tweeting feverishly about it, but even he was surprised when he actually heard the nominations announcement. After the group manager called the entire OFWGKTA to a meeting, Tyler grew weary. “We were like, ‘What the f— does he have us here for?’ We were ready to leave. Then the VMA nomination thing came on and I was on my phone and I was like, ‘Oh crap I want to see what wack videos they have this time,’ ” Tyler recalled of his skepticism before being hit with the news. “Then they said my name and was talkin’ about it and I was like ‘What the hell?’ I kinda stopped breathing, I was just sitting there. I was kinda shaking. I don’t know, it was surreal.”

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry And The Case Of Pop-Star Alter Egos

Why two mermaids are too much, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry and Lady Gaga
Photo: MTV News / Getty Images

I suppose it’s every pop star’s prerogative to adopt an alter ego: Where would Beyoncé be without Sasha Fierce? How could Nicki Minaj exist without Roman Zolanski? Can Mariah ever not be Mimi?

All valid questions, to be certain, and yet … maybe it’s time we stop asking them. With all due respect to the Queen B, Ms. Minaj and the Magnificent Mariah (or any of the myriad of pop stars who have sought to reinvent themselves over the years), it is entirely possible that we have finally reached the point of no return. And as such, perhaps we should to retire the alter-ego idea entirely.

This has nothing to do with my feelings about alter egos, second selves, or even doppelgängers, since, as a general rule of thumb, I am in favor of them, especially when they involve rock music (Ziggy Stardust!), comic books (Superman!) and/or professional wrestling (the Undertaker!) But it has everything to do with mermaids. Or, more specifically, the fact that, at this very moment, two of the biggest pop stars on the planet are attempting to foist mermaid alter egos upon us … and neither seems to have a problem with that.

It all started last month, when Lady Gaga pulled on a fishtail and became Yuyi the Mermaid for a performance on French TV. In theory, this was all right with me, considering A) Yuyi will apparently be featured in her next music video and B) I have never been wronged by a mermaid, mostly because they are mythological creatures. The event that made me reconsider my feelings actually occurred earlier this week, when Katy Perry took to her Twitter account to post a photo of herself, mid-plank, dressed as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid.”

Not surprisingly, this angered Gaga’s little monsters (and Laurieann Gibson), but I’d suggest that their outrage was misguided. They shouldn’t be mad at Perry for going mermaid, they should be mad at pop stars in general. Because, really, if we’ve reached the point where they can’t even come up with original alter egos any more, well, then perhaps it’s time to do away with the concept altogether.

And yes, I realize that mermaids are inexplicably hot right now, what with their inclusion in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and Stephenie Meyer’s upcoming book, in which they will apparently devour men or something. Still, have we officially run out of alter egos? Shoot, Gaga has already been a motorcycle, a space mother, and Mary Magdalene … and that’s just since she released Born This Way. And Katy? She’s currently working another alter ego, an orthodontically enhanced teen named Kathy Beth Terry. Couldn’t one of them be a centaur? Joan of Arc? Abraham Lincoln?

Apparently not. And since we’ve apparently reached the alter ego’s event horizon, I’m proposing a five-year moratorium on any and all split personalities. Let’s all just chill a bit … give the batteries some time to recharge. You may think I’m being reactionary, but deep down, you know I’m right. I don’t want to live in a world where our pop stars have been reduced to dueling mermaids, simply because there were no other alternatives. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit idly by and watch as the good name of Chris Gaines is dragged through the mud. Especially by mermaids.

Have our favorite pop stars taken the mermaid trend too far? Sound off in the comments!

The Rossdale Boys: California Cool

It was a boys’ day out for Gavin Rossdale and his sons Kingston, 5, and Zuma, 2 1/2, who were without mom Gwen Stefani as they took a trip to a museum in Los Angeles, California today (July 23).

The Rossdale brothers were both rocking their funky ‘dos: Kingston’s mohawk is back to blond these days while Zuma was sporting a ponytail like his dad.

England gets UFC 138 in November, fall fight schedule is sick

England gets UFC 138 in November, fall fight schedule is sick

Did you enjoy the slight lull in the fight schedule during July? Don’t get used to it. With the news that UFC 138 was just added to the Zuffa schedule, the fall shapes up as the busiest slate in fighting history.

Gareth A. Davies from The Telegraph broke the story that Chris Leben and Mark Munoz will square off in the main event in Birmingham, England on Nov. 5 at LG Arena.

Marshall Zelaznik, UFC UK vice-president, told The Telegraph yesterday: “I’m very happy to announce UFC 138 will be bringing fireworks to Birmingham on November 5.  The last time the UFC was in the second city was UFC 89 in October 2008, and we are very happy to be going back there this bonfire night.”

Bloody Elbow also pointed out that Leben vs. Munoz will be the first non-title five round main event. The UFC announced last month that all main events were going to be five rounds.

Davies says no other British fighters have been finalized for the card yet, but he did suggest Brad Pickett (No. 9 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow MMA rankings) could face Urijah Faber (No. 4) or Miguel Torres (No. 7).

Update: MMAjunkie reports that Pickett has a fight at UFC 138 against Renan Barao. Barao debuted at UFC 130 with a win over Cole Escovedo.

If you like watching MMA events in person then put together a healthy travel budget because starting with Strikeforce 36 on Sept. 10 there is a Zuffa MMA card 9-of-13 weeks. That may turn into 10-of-14 if a card rumored for Dec. 10 lands in Montreal.

There’s are also some great boxing matches that’ll fill two of the off weeks. Bernard Hopkins battles Chad Dawson on Oct. 15 and Manny Pacquiao returns on Nov. 12 to face Juan Manuel Marquez. The UFC goes head-to-head against Floyd Mayweather on Sept. 17 and the Showtime Super Six Final with Andre Ward against Carl Froch on Oct. 29.

Fall fight schedule:

9/17 – UFN 23 in New Orleans (Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz)

9/24 – UFC 135 in Denver

10/1 – UFC on Versus 6 in Washington D.C.

10/8 – UFC 136 in Houston

10/15 – BOXING: Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson in A.C.

10/29 – UFC 137 in Las Vegas (Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch)

11/5 – UFC 138 on Spike in Birmingham, U.K.

11/12 – Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas

11/19 – UFC 139 in San Jose

12/3 – The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in Las Vegas

12/10 – UFC 140 rumored for Montreal

Fertitta interview Part 2: Expanding the schedule and big television deal on the horizon

This is a huge year for the UFC. Unlike 2004 and 2005, when the promotion was basically begging television executives to work with its product, the UFC’s in a position of strength.

Back then, the UFC would run events every few months. The schedule has expanded to the point where its approaching 30 events each year. Another five years from now, there may only may only be a few weeks a year without an event.

“I could definitely see potentially a fight a week. There’s only so much we can push on the pay-per-view side of it. there’s only so many big fights we can ask the public to pay for, ” UFC president Lorenzo Fertitta told ESPNRadio1100′s “The MMA Insiders” show. “But if you’re getting it on free TV, I don’t see why people wouldn’t want to watch.”

If the UFC has that many fight cards, it’ll be looking for more outlets. or control of its own network.

“The reality is as the sport continues to grow, not just here in North America, but around the globe … there’s going to need to be dates to cultivate that talent as well,” said Fertitta.

Fertitta joined Kevin Iole and myself on ESPNRadio1100 on Friday. In Part one of the interview, Fertitta was critical of the Culinary Union for blocking MMA’s legalization in New York.

Working in MMA: Mike Dolce talks about peak performance, Maury and manicures

Working in MMA: Mike Dolce talks about peak performance, Maury and manicuresThis week, Cagewriter is taking a look at the different jobs that help the MMA world turn. See part I of the series here.

Today, we look at Mike Dolce, the peak performance coach who is known to help fighters improve their nutrition, and in turn, the way they fight. After working as a strength coach for 20 years and appearing on the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Dolce has worked with fighters such as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Thiago Alves, Chris Leben and Vitor Belfort.

Cagewriter: What is your job like on a day-to-day basis?

Mike Dolce: I’m running multiple training camps from afar. Right now, in Vegas, I’m running Vitor Belfort’s training camp and Mike Pyle’s. I also have Thiago Alves coming up, and I’m his head coach. I cover so many hats with him, but Vitor and Pyle, I work specifically with their nutrition and weight management issues.

I say more peak performance coach because I do the meals, I do the weights, I do the overall training management. I’m the filter for the other coaches. I set up the training schedule from day to day. I even structure in their business meetings and social function as they get closer to fight time.

CW: Thiago, for example, you set his day?

MD: With Thiago, I literally set up his 24 hours, seven-day a week schedule. Which coach to go to, when he’s not allowed to train, because that can be a problem with him, so I have to pull him back a lot. I have to schedule in massage therapy or alternate therapies to make sure he’s not going to go to the gym.

On Sundays, I would schedule “Man-Day.” He and I would go have a nice breakfast, and then go to a spa. We’d get a haircut, massages, get our feet and hands fixed it, even the random facial. It’s important. I incorporate all those things to make sure my fighters are well-rounded.

I try to keep what I call “the positive bubble around fighters” and not let any negativity in. With Mike Pyle, I would get breakfast ready as he watched a fishing show on Versus, but now the Tour de France is on. It broke our rhythm, so instead of watching fishing, he switched to another channel with Maury and the Jerry Springer show. I’m in the kitchen, 20 feet away and I can feel the negative energy come out of the TV. I had to change the channel just to watch something more positive. You can’t start your day with that kind of negative mind frame.

CW: What is a fight week like for you?

MD: I try to get to town a day prior to the athlete, then I set up the hotel room and do the food shopping. For Chris Leben, he got into town on Monday night, and before he even got here, I packed a huge cooler with the proper foods that Chris was going to need. I made sure he had everything he was going to need, coordinate with his team, talk about what his weight cut process is going to be. On weigh-in day, I will be with him through the weigh-ins, and then go back to his room for the rehydration process. That carries all the way through to the minute he steps in the cage, performs, and then even afterwards, when I give him the food and fluids that need to go in his body to help him repair and recover from that. My job typically doesn’t end until Sunday morning.

CW: What is the best part of your job?

MD: The best part of my job is spreading health. My primary focus is not world titles, and it’s not money, or any of those things. It’s to make my athletes as healthy as possible. That’s the most rewarding part: seeing kids like Thiago Alves, not so much go out there and have a dominant performance, but it’s for him to feel so good and be so happy with himself because his body is in a positive state. Performance is just a by-product of that.

CW: But what’s the worst part?

MD: I wouldn’t point to a worst part and say that it’s bad, but the hardest part is dealing with the ups and the downs of the sport. You can work with an athlete, and have a great training camp and he’ll go out there on fight night, and something doesn’t work. I’m so emotionally attached to my fighters that it’s a hard roller coaster. For me, it’s multiple times in a single night.

Actually, the worst part is the time away from my family, but it’s a choice, but I’m not going to be a victim to it. It’s something we’ve decided over the next few years to do this.

Follow Mike Dolce on Twitter here. Tomorrow’s working in MMA profile will focus on Bernie Profato, head of the Ohio Athletic Commission.

Lady Gaga’s YouTube Account Suspended

Gaga’s page reportedly suspended due to copyright complaint over a Japanese TV show clip.

Lady Gaga has long been the Queen of YouTube. Her videos have racked up more than a billion views on the site and fans have flocked to it in droves to post their home-brewed takes on her outfits, fashion, music and videos.

But little monsters who were looking for their daily fix of Gaga on Thursday (July 14) were likely disappointed when they went to Mother Monster’s YouTube account and found the following message, “This account has been suspended due to multiple or severe violations of YouTube’s Copyright Policy.”

What gives?

According to Time Out Tokyo, Gaga’s official YouTube account was suspended because she posted footage from her recent appearance on the Japanese show “SMAP x SMAP,” on the Fuji TV network. The widely-circulated video of the 10-minute performance in which Gaga sang a medley of songs from Born This Way resulted in a takedown request from Media Interactive Inc. on Tuesday.

The video features Gaga performing on a fog-enshrouded set with the popular Japanese boy band SMAP, and the issue appears to involve Gaga’s failure to secure the digital rights to display their performance on her YouTube account. In the clip, Gaga emerges from an ornate box wearing a an elaborate black dust mask and sings “The Edge of Glory” before sitting down at a piano housed in a giant bejeweled hand sculpture for a solo take on “You and I” that morphs into the album’s title track.

The “Born This Way” performance features the members of SMAP standing and posing behind Gaga, joining her dancers in some high-energy choreography and singing light backup duties on the hit track.

Spokespeople for Gaga and YouTube could not be reached for comment at press time.

On Monday, Gaga tweeted her excitement about the SMAP performance, writing, “My performance+cooking show appearance on SMAP SMAP is airing now in Japan. Kawaii Monsters!” A week earlier, she Twitpic’d a sepia-toned photo of her with the group as well.

Justin Bieber’s Next Big Adventure: Pee-wee Herman’s Movie?

Pee-wee makes a plea from Comic-Con for singer to cameo in his Judd Apatow-produced film.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian

SAN DIEGO — Beliebers are in luck, because Justin Bieber might be heading to the big screen once again soon, if Pee-wee Herman has his way.

Turns out Herman, who has been working on a new film alongside producer Judd Apatow, has recently written the VMA nominee in as one of the celebrity cameos. The only problem? Bieber doesn’t know yet.

“I can’t really tell [what the cameo is], but he makes an appearance toward the end of the film,” Herman (actor Paul Reubens, but we definitely interviewed Pee-wee) told MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con. “He doesn’t know about it yet, so if you’re watching this, Justin!”

That’s not the only grade-A cameo Herman has written into the script. He has his eyes on lots of stars — and the White House.

“There’s a party scene in the film that I think will have a lot of the stars. We just wrote President Obama into them. We have an offer out to him,” Herman unveiled. Will any other government officials be given a role in the movie? “Sarah Palin wasn’t asked. I have to draw the line somewhere, and unfortunately that’s where it was drawn. I’m sorry, Sarah, I’m sorry,” he whispered.

The script for the currently unnamed comedy is being looked at by Universal Studios at the moment, and Herman said he hoped filming could begin within the next couple of months. It only helps that he has Apatow in his court and that the director/producer has words of wisdom to pass on to Herman to make the best comedy he can.

“He’s given us the same advice over and over again, which is ‘emotional arc,’ ” Herman explained. “He wants the character to go through an emotional arc and to come out on the other end arced. So that’s what we’re doing. We’re adding an emotional arc. Emotional growth, so there’s a change in Pee-wee Herman during this film. Pee-wee makes a change.”

Michael Jackson Estate Rakes In $310 Million To Date

Singer left behind more than $400 million in debt.

Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer’s shocking death in June 2009.

According to TMZ, legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ’s estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death.

The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star’s mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children.

“Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate’s debt,” the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson’s longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon.

In addition to paying to make “substantial improvements” to the Jackson family’s Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on “last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses.” Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as “costume for memorial.”

TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debt, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They’ve also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson’s properties.

Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer’s back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the “This Is It” movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors’ claims, some of which are subject to “extremely high” interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries.

‘Twilight’ Fans Dying To See Sex Scene At Comic-Con

‘Let’s get real: We all want to see the sex,’ one fan tells MTV News of what she’s expecting at ‘Breaking Dawn’ panel.

SAN DIEGO — There are a plethora of newsworthy stories coming out of San Diego Comic-Con throughout the next few days, but the biggest on Thursday (July 21) is the squeal-inducing appearance of the “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” cast at their highly anticipated panel in Hall H.

MTV News sought out the most dedicated fans Wednesday night, many of whom have been camping out for the panel for several days, to find out what footage from the film they hope to see during the panel.

“Let’s get real: We all want to see the sex,” Melissa Miller admitted of Edward and Bella’s first time. “We all have interpretations in our minds of what happens, but now we actually get to see it.”

Sisters Kristine and Aprille Lacayanga echoed Miller’s sentiments, though in a less direct way.

“We’re not sure what they rated the movie yet,” Kristine said. “But the intense scene when they first make love, because in the book it was very, ah, intense,” she said with a smile.

Fan and admitted hopeless romantic Elizabeth Castellanos revealed that she’s looking forward to seeing Bella and Edward get married.

“I heard [Bella's wedding dress] is supposed to be really beautiful, and they took awhile designing it,” she said. “I’m excited to see the wedding,” she added. “I’m a die-hard romantic. I’m so excited to see Edward and Bella tie the knot.”

The one male fan we happened upon gave us an expectedly masculine answer to what he hopes to see.

“More fighting,” Alex Gilder said. “I’m not much of a lovey-dovey guy, so [I want to see] more fighting.”

“What I really want to see is the arm-wrestling competition between Bella and Emmett,” Arianna Ruiz said, before her friend Elaine Malmrose reminded her that the arm-wrestling scene could be in the second film.

“Oh, that ‘s true,” Ruiz conceded. “OK, so then the sex scene.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing some of the more exotic vampires,” Annie Dorado added. “Like the guys from Romania.”

“I would like to keep some things a mystery,” Malmrose said. “I don’t want to see the wedding dress, but there is one scene where they’re getting ready to take Edward out for his bachelor-party type of thing.”

“I’m a Jacob fan, so I’m dying to see some of his reactions at the wedding,” Candy Hattori said. “Just a little bit. Not enough to spoil it, but enough to make it exciting.”

?Cro Cop? returns for another UFC fight against Roy Nelson

?Cro Cop? returns for another UFC fight against Roy Nelson

Dana White is trying to allow the legends of MMA to walk away gracefully, but some won’t cooperate. After UFC 132, White said “I think that’s it.” We’re still waiting on an answer from Silva. He did the same after UFC 128 with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, but it looks like the former PRIDE star wants to continue to eran a few bucks.

Cro Cop wants to fight on and is owed another bout on his contract. So coming off an ugly third round knockout loss to Brendan Schaub, Cro Cop announced he’ll be facing Roy Nelson at UFC 137 in October.

“I’ve had no contact with Dana White and have not re-negotiated with the UFC. I agreed to my next fight and that’s it,” Filipovic explained. “I can now exclusively confirm that I will fight my last UFC fight October 29 in Las Vegas against Roy Nelson.”

Cro Cop, 36, has been battling a nasty knee injury over the last few years, but says he’s good to go now.

“We will see in the next fight. I am happy that I managed to rehabilitate my injury. I received a few injections to the knee. It is an unpleasant procedure. They take your blood and separate parts of it using a a centrifuge and then inject [the plasma rich platelets] into the knee to stimulate cartilage regeneration,” Cro Cop said. “This knee was destroyed, but I managed to repair it. I felt terrible pain, and now twice a week I’m doing exercises with physiotherapy. “

Cage Potato calls this a win or go home fight for both fighters. Do you agree? Nelson’s lost two straight, but against Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.

Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “OMG” and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year’s biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn’t heard “Dynamite” or “In My Head”?

The love went both ways, with dance music’s biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year’s VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

“You definitely saw tempos go up this year,” Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. “And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now.”

“I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower,” said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. “I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment.”

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: “I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there.”

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

“I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it,” said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. “He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile ‘unst-unst.’ But it’s just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent.”

“You have someone like will.i.am, who’s like, ‘Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,’ and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music,” Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. “R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year.”

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: “It’s actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that’s gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z’s thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience.”

“I think it’s caught on this year because the people who’ve done it have been successful,” offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. “Like ‘OMG,’ with usher, he didn’t have success until he made a dance record. He had ‘There Goes My Baby’ and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn’t really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, ‘OK, let me just try this out.’ It’s like Auto-Tune. Like, ‘Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.’ They end up liking it and doing more of it.”

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

“I do think it’s a blip,” Caramanica said. “I don’t think that’s gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we’ll all look back on and go, ‘Wasn’t that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?”

“At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, ‘Let me go back to my soul background,’ ” Hope said. “When you actually have to say something, dance doesn’t really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it’s kind of a fad.”

“I think music is very cyclical,” Eng offered. “So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I’m sure it will phase out at some point.”

Wilson called dance music “the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer.”

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

UFC 135 hype begins with good trash talk between Jones and ?Rampage?

UFC 135 hype begins with good trash talk between Jones and ?Rampage?Where’s the hook? Some fans may have asked that question when the Jon Jones-Quinton “Rampage” Jackson fight was announced for UFC 135.

After watching today’s press conference in Denver, there’s certainly some great angles we’ll be discussing before the October fight – Old vs. young, washed up vs. overhyped along with who’s cockier?

Rampage brought his top notch trash talking skills to Denver. He got off some doozies which included mocking Jones (GIF) for his unorthodox staredown.

Jackson said Jones reminds him of his former reality show adversary Rashad Evans.

“Him and Rashad got something in common. They’re both really cocky. I’m confident, very confident in myself. There’s a difference. Last time I was this confident, I knocked someone [Chuck Liddell] out in the first round and got that belt,” Jackson said during the prefight press conference right outside the Pepsi Center . “I’ve been working hard, training and doing all the right things, all the stuff I need to be doing. That belt’s coming back to me, for real.”

Jackson also tried to diminish the Jones’ win that got him the UFC light heavyweight title.

“I just have to say, straight up, I respect you dog. I do think you are the future of MMA, straight-up. I’m keeping it real. But you fought [Mauricio] ‘Shogun’ Rua when he was rusty as hell. He hadn’t fought for a year. He had like two knee surgeries.”

Jones suggested there will also be excuses from folks after he beats Jackson.

“He didn’t fight the PRIDE Rampage, he fought the movie-star Rampage, so there will always be excuses,” said Jones.

Then Jackson went on the offensive over being called old by some fans and media.

“I’m only 33. Goodness. You all act like I’m Randy Couture’s decrepit old ass, Jackson said. “You know, if I have to represent the old school, I guess I’ll represent them. I guess I’m old school, but with old school comes a lot of experience. He’s the youngest champion, but I think [Jones is] the least experienced champion in UFC history.”

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Star Rooney Mara ‘Nailed’ The Part

Daniel Craig tells MTV News his co-star is ‘massively impressive’ as hacker Lisbeth Salander.
By Eric Ditzian

Who would win the right to be Lisbeth Salander? Last summer, Hollywood was consumed with that question, as some of the biggest names in the business competed to land that coveted starring role in David Fincher’s adaptation of the international best-selling crime thriller, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Actresses like Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart and Ellen Page reportedly were eyeing the gig, and yet it went to a relative unknown named Rooney Mara. The fresh-faced Mara seemed an unlikely choice at first to play Salander, an emotionally scarred, motorcycle-driving hacker not adverse to violent confrontations with anyone who crosses her. But our first look at Mara in character assuaged any fan misgivings: Mara has turned into Salander.

And perhaps no one was more impressed by that transformation than co-star Daniel Craig, who plays Mikael Blomkvist, the disgraced journalist hired to investigate a decades-old missing-persons case. Blomkvist then hires Salander to assist in the search.

“Rooney is massively impressive,” he told MTV News during a recent “Cowboys & Aliens” press event. “She took [it] on under a massive amount of pressure because obviously there’s a lot of expectation. I was massively impressed and she absolutely nailed this. People are hopefully are going to be incredibly surprised and happy with her performance.”

“Dragon Tattoo” marks Fincher’s first film after the Oscar-nominated hit “The Social Network,” in which Mara played a small role. During production on that Facebook-focused flick, Jesse Eisenberg was blown away that Fincher would shoot certain scenes 60 times or more. Craig experienced something similar on “Dragon Tattoo,” though he emphasized he expected nothing less.

“Yeah, but I don’t count,” he said of Fincher’s copious takes. “People are always asking me about that, saying, ‘Isn’t that strange or whatever it is?’ but actors live for that. I want to do it over and over again until I get it right. I don’t count, so I couldn’t tell you what the largest amount of takes are. … The whole process was great. All of it was great. I had a lot of fun on it.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Katy Perry Follows Lady Gaga In Mermaid Trend

Perry posts photo of herself ‘planking’ in fins shortly after Gaga teases a mermaid-themed video.
By Jocelyn Vena

Katy Perry
Photo: Katy Perry/ Twitter

Of all the potential beefs in the music industry, mermaids didn’t seem like the most likely of instigators. But that may change. Shortly after Lady Gaga teased that her mermaid alter ego, Yuyi, might be “born” in her next music video, Katy Perry tweeted a photo of herself dressed as a mermaid.

“PROPER planking FTW! #itswhatArielwoulddo,” she wrote on Twitter, showing off her second entry into the Internet phenom of planking, in which people post photos of themselves lying face down, with their arms at their sides, in awkward locations.

In the photo, Perry is done up in full mermaid attire: She’s wearing a purple wig with a starfish hairpin, a shimmering aqua-and-pink mermaid tail with a matching bra top. She’s surrounded by shiny paper acting as water and a bridge prop looms in the background. There’s been no word on the official purpose of the photo shoot.

While Gaga hasn’t commented on any mermaid similarities, her creative director, Laurieann Gibson, did make reference to it on Twitter just hours after Perry tweeted the photo of herself. “Proud of my artist #1 in the world @Ladygaga her vision& passion. even though they try to steal a tail there’s only 1 Mermaid, Swim On!!!” Gibson wrote.

Gaga has certainly been trying to make her mermaid phase happen for some time now. She initially introduced fans to Yuyi on Twitter earlier this summer and donned mermaid attire for her performance on “Le Grand Journal.” Though she apparently nixed the rumored mermaid treatment for her “Edge of Glory” video, she told a Taiwanese talk show last week that Yuyi is “in incubation” and may appear in the video for her yet-unannounced fourth Born This Way single.

Of course, neither Gaga nor Perry would be the first pop star to think of using the mythological creatures for their sets. In Madonna’s black-and-white clip for 1989′s “Cherish,” directed by the late fashion photographer Herb Ritts, Madonna splashes in the waves with mermen. Mermaids are popping up elsewhere in pop culture, too, as a major plot point in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and in several new novels, including an upcoming book by “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer.

Lombard to Marquardt: ?Let?s make it happen, brother?

Nate Marquardt’s suspension has been officially lifted by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. Earlier this week, Bellator middleweight Hector Lombard doubted that a fight between him and the maligned former UFC star would happen, but now he has another message for Marquardt:

That’s right, Lombard would like to welcome Marquardt to Bellator as well as “whoop him up.”

It’s a fight that makes sense for both men, as Lombard’s biggest problem in Bellator has been a lack of challenges. For Marquardt, it’s the best fight available after being cut publicly from the UFC just after his suspension messed up the main event for UFC on Versus 4.

Tyra Bank Reveals New Novel, Talks “Top Model”

Stopping by for a media appearance, Tyra Banks visited “Good Morning America” in New York City today (July 21).

The 37-year-old supermodel took to the early show to promote her debut novel “Modelland,” which is the first of a three-part series.

The book, which unravels in a fantasy land, centers around a super-exclusive school that turns out supermodels called “Intoxibellas” – specifically focusing most of the text on four girls who made their way into the prestigious establishment despite their unconventional looks.

Tyra also dished about the forthcoming 17th season of “America’s Next Top Model,” detailing all the drama that it has in store for viewers, “I have girls from cycle one until now – the fan favorites. I am editing the show right now and it is crazy. They are all these Type A personalities because you are getting the best of the best and they are effervescent and they pop,” she told host Robin Roberts.

Banks then hinted to the new challenges this crop of potential runway women will have to endure, telling, “I have them singing songs, doing music videos, creating perfumes… You can’t just be a model anymore.”

Katy Perry, Adele And More 2011 VMA Nominees … Possibly

Bigger Than the Sound tries to predict the nominees for this year’s Video Music Awards.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry
Photo: Amy Sussman/ Getty Images

I’ve been told that the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards — which air live Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — are going to be announced on MTV and MTV.com on Wednesday night (July 20) at 11 p.m ET, and that means you should probably get ready for a whole lot of Katy Perry. And Adele. And Britney Spears. And Lady Gaga. Oh, and Rihanna too.

That’s because, to paraphrase Beyoncé (oh yeah, she’ll probably get nominated too), it’s been girls who’ve run the world in 2011, and the VMAs will probably be no exception. Perry — who has basically been unstoppable since last summer — figures to be the most nominated artist, with this year’s breakout star, Adele, close behind. Britney, Gaga and all the rest figure to be in the hunt too. In fact, one has to wonder if the folks behind the show will just go ahead and eliminate the Best Male Video category altogether. More room for the ladies that way.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until those nominations are officially revealed, but while we wait, I figured it was time to dust off the old Prognostication Cap and try to predict the 2011 VMA nominees in advance. I’ve done this for seemingly every awards show in the past, and sometimes I even manage to avoid embarrassing myself completely (not always, though).

So without any advance knowledge — and using as many sweeping generalizations as humanly possible — here are my picks for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Accuracy not entirely guaranteed.

Best Male Video
In a year dominated by females, I suppose someone has to win Best Male Video. I think it’s a given that Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Eminem all land nods here, and I suspect Justin Bieber will sneak in too, if only because it builds off his Best New Artist win last year. The fifth spot is up for grabs, though in a pinch, I’ll go with Pitbull, if only because of the recent success of “Give Me Everything.” Lupe Fiasco or Trey Songz are also viable choices. My picks:

» Bruno Mars, “Grenade”
» Chris Brown, “She Ain’t You”
» Eminem feat. Rihanna, “Love The Way You Lie”
» Justin Bieber, “U Smile”
» Pitbull, “Give Me Everything”

Best Female Video
Sure, Video of the Year is the night’s biggest award, but given the success of every artist with a pair of X chromosomes, the Best Female Video might be the toughest — and not just to win. Predicting who even gets nominated is a challenge, considering there are only five spots available. Adele and Katy Perry seem mortal locks, and Rihanna is close. Britney will probably earn a nom too, which means that either Beyoncé, Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj will be left on the outside looking in. Told you this was going to be tough. My picks:

» Adele, “Rolling in the Deep”
» Britney Spears, “Hold It Against Me”
» Beyoncé, “Run the World (Girls)”
» Katy Perry, “E.T.”
» Rihanna, “S&M”

Best Rock Video
My official title at MTV News is “rock editor,” but even I had a hard time coming up with five nominees here. Since 30 Seconds to Mars won last year, I suspect they’ll be back to defend their crown. Folks were excited about the Foo Fighters’ return, so pencil them in too. Mumford & Sons may very well be the year’s most unexpected success, which should earn them a nod. The other two slots? I’m not gonna lie, I just picked names out of a hat.

» 30 Seconds to Mars, “Hurricane”
» Foo Fighters, “Rope”
» Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks”
» Linkin Park, “Waiting for the End”
» Mumford & Sons, “Little Lion Man”

Best Hip-Hop Video
A wide-open category, and one that raises several questions: Can Eminem win for the second year in a row? Will Nicki Minaj manage to bum-rush the boys’ club? Is Kanye West’s epic “Runaway” mini-movie even eligible? I’m not going to pretend to know all the answers, but it certainly makes for an interesting field. In the end, I left Em off — since “Love the Way You Lie” was released in such a nebulous time (August 2010, a month before last year’s VMAs and a full 12 months before this year’s) — and went with the Beastie Boys, since I have a creeping suspicion they’ll earn a nod or two, and this seems as logical a place as any. Nicki and Kanye are in (though I went with the latter’s “Monster” video), and so is Lil Wayne. For the last spot, I went with Lupe Fiasco, though it wouldn’t surprise me to see Tyler, the Creator here instead.

» Beastie Boys, “Make Some Noise”
» Kanye West (featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj), “Monster”
» Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), “6 Foot 7 Foot”
» Lupe Fiasco, “The Show Goes On”
» Nicki Minaj, “Super Bass”

Best Pop Video
Another big-time category, another bunch of deserving artists destined to be left out. I like Britney’s, Katy’s and Gaga’s chances, and I’ll toss Rihanna into the mix too. For the fifth spot, I went with Bruno Mars, since, otherwise, this category would basically just be Best Female Video, Part II. Of course, in doing that, I excluded Adele, Beyoncé, Ke$ha and about a dozen other worthy acts too. Prognostication is hard work, people.

» Britney Spears, “Hold It Against Me”
» Bruno Mars, “Grenade”
» Katy Perry, “E.T.”
» Lady Gaga, “Born This Way”
» Rihanna, “S&M”

Best New Artist
Who will follow in the footsteps of Biebus Christ (and Lady Gaga) and take home the Moonman for Best New Artist? Good question! This is always one of the hardest categories to predict, and this year is no different: The only sure things seem to be Mumford & Sons and Wiz Khalifa, and though Robyn isn’t exactly new, she’s new enough here (and made some terrific strides over the past 12 months), so I think she’s a lock. In a pinch, I’ll pick Foster the People (big radio hit) and Tyler, the Creator (big buzz), though Kreayshawn could sneak in too.

» Foster the People
» Mumford & Sons
» Robyn
» Tyler, the Creator
» Wiz Khalifa

Video of the Year
Last year’s Video of the Year race featured a trio of underdogs — 30 Seconds to Mars, B.o.B, Florence and the Machine — thrown into the mix. Will 2011 follow suit? Probably not. Adele seems to be a no-brainer, even if most folks have never seen the video for “Rolling in the Deep.” Katy, too, but it remains to be seen which of her videos gets the nod. (I went with “Firework.” It’s mad inspirational.) Em will be back — though one has to wonder if “Love the Way You Lie” peaked too early to be considered a genuine front-runner — and Gaga should return also. I went dark-horse with my fifth pick, taking the Foo Fighters’ “Rope” over bigger clips from Beyoncé and Rihanna, mostly because I’ve got a sweet spot for VHS.

» Adele, “Rolling in the Deep”
» Eminem (featuring Rihanna), “Love the Way You Lie”
» Foo Fighters, “Rope”
» Katy Perry, “Firework”

Rosholt moves one step closer to UFC return with win over Horwich

Rosholt moves one step closer to UFC return with win over HorwichIt’s never easy against Matt Horwich, but if you fight smart and stay out his guard, you can get a win. Jake Rosholt didn’t thrill the crowd in Frisco, Tx., but he stuck to his gameplan and took out the veteran to improve to 5-1 away from UFC in the main event of Shark Fights 17.

Rosholt (12-3, 1 NC) got a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all cards. He mixed takedowns with some solid body work on the feet. The former three-time NCAA Div. 1 national champion wrestler at Oklahoma State scored five takedowns in all, but never went to the ground with Horwich, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt fighting under Eddie Bravo.

“I’m just glad to get out here and get a win against him. It was a scrap. I knew it would be 15 minutes of scrapping,” Rosholt told HDNet’s Ron Kruck. “I was going to land some strikes, land some to his body and wear him out a little bit. I don’t see very many people end Matt Horwich .

Following a loss against Kendall Grove at UFC 106, Rosholt was dropped by the UFC. He’s only been a pro in MMA since July of 2007. He entered the WEC as a green fighter and got just one fight with Zuffa’s smaller promotion before it phased out the middleweight division. Rosholt was probably thrown to the wolves a little too early in UFC. He went 1-2 with a win over Chris Leben and losses to Grove and Dan Miller. Clearly, his goal is to get back to the UFC.

“I just want to keep fighting and keep getting better all the time. Sooner or later I’ll get there. That’s where I deserve to be. That’s where the best fighters are. That’s where I want to fight,” said Rosholt.

The takedowns always score with the judges and Horwich stayed on his back too long. On the feet, Horwich’s charging flurries confused Rosholt a bit in the first, but it was the wrestler who did more damage in the long run. In the final round, he tried an unorthodox flying knee that missed, but followed it up with a left hook that opened a cut over Horwich’s right eye. Horwich also had significant swelling under the eye by the end of the fight.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez was also on the card. He ran through a very overmatched Doug Williams and won via rear-naked choke at 2:16 of the first round. Williams (5-13-1) was a late replacement after a wacky weigh-in day where Rodriguez’s original opponent missed the catchweight by 23 pounds. This is a career rebirth for Rodriguez (47-11), who’s fighting back from a well-publicized battle against drug addiction. The UFC champ back in 2002 ballooned to 300-plus pounds. Last night, he was 227 pounds and still looks like he should eventually fight down at 205 with some more conditioning work. Rodriguez’s previous two fights were at a 215-pound catchweight.

The most dramatic moment of the night came when Alan Jouban crushed and finished Andrew Goldthwaite with a left hook (3:25 mark).

Justin Bieber?s Twitter crashed Dana White?s phone

Justin Bieber?s Twitter crashed Dana White?s phone

UFC president Dana White loves Twitter because of how he can communicate directly with fans and reach more than a million of his followers within seconds. But he found the downside of the popular social networking site during UFC 132 on Saturday night after he was included in tweets by superstar Justin Bieber.

Justin Bieber?s Twitter crashed Dana White?s phone

Bieber attended the blockbuster card with his father, and he tweeted that he was “chillin’ with White,” and later that he scored the fights with White. According to the New York Post, Bieber’s more than 10 million followers took notice, and their many, many replies and retweets crashed White’s BlackBerry. That’s why he was relatively quiet on Twitter for a fight night.

Bieber’s father, who has been at UFC fights in the past, attended the fights with his son, but this was the first time Justin was Octagon-side. Like many MMA fans, he disagreed with the judges on the winner of the Matt Wiman-Dennis Siver bout.

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official ‘Hollywood Tonight’ remix coming to Miami Music Week.
By Akshay Bhansali

Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas’ Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he’s most proud.

“I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals,” Chuckie said. “I did this remix for this track ‘Hollywood Tonight.’ I couldn’t say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, ‘You can’t say nothing about this. It’s kind of a secret project.’ It’s gonna come out anytime now.”

“Hollywood Tonight” was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson’s posthumous Michael album, and Chuckie’s mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.

“I will play it Miami,” Chuckie revealed. “I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I’m the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it’s an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday.”

So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money’s “I Hate That You Love Me”? Well, according to the “Let the Bass Kick” producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.

“I had to bring in the raucous,” Chuckie confessed. “Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it.”

Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining “No Sugar Added” at Nikki Beach on Friday.

Are you excited to hear Chuckie’s remix of Michael Jackson’s “Hollywood Tonight”? Let us know in the comments below!

Mila Kunis Thinks ‘Friends With Benefits’ Relationships Can Work

Co-stars Bryan Greenberg, Patricia Clarkson aren’t so sure.
By Amy Wilkinson

Photo: MTV News

In spite of the rather raunchy, nearly naked ad campaign for “Friends With Benefits,” the movie’s all-star cast, including Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, turned up fully clothed at the romantic comedy’s world premiere Monday night at New York City’s Ziegfeld Theatre.

But on a hot, sweltering night devoted to celebrating no-strings-attached relationships, the topic of sex came up early and often. So, of course, we had to ask the film’s stars if they thought a friends-with-benefits relationship like the one depicted in writer/director Will Gluck’s July 22 release could really work long-term.

“Not in my life because I’ve tried it and failed miserably,” laughed Bryan Greenberg, who plays one of Kunis’ suitors.

For the most part, Greenberg’s co-stars were of the same opinion.

Jenna Elfman, who plays Timberlake’s sister, said, “I’ve been with my husband for 20 years, so I haven’t first-hand attempted a friends-with-benefits lifestyle.” But she still had her reservations: “I really, frankly, don’t think it’s workable.”

“For some people, yes; for me, not so much,” Patricia Clarkson agreed.

Even Gluck, the film’s writer/director, admitted he thinks it’s an impossible undertaking. “I think the scenario works very briefly and in college — everyone else is kidding themselves.”

The sole dissenter was Kunis, who said it all depends on your definition of “works.” “Sure! I mean, you get upgraded or downgraded; it switches and takes different positions. You get promoted, or you get fired.”

Do you think a friends-with-benefits relationship can work? Will you see the flick? Tell us in the comments!

Lady Gaga Teases Mermaid-Themed Music Video

Gaga says that her mermaid alter-ego, Yuyi, ‘is in incubation’ and may be born in her next clip.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga is still doing her part to make mermaids the next big thing in mythological creature trends. Though she went with a lo-fi, ’80s-esque video for “The Edge of Glory” instead of her rumored “fishy” theme, there’s a chance she could go under the sea for a different clip.

“I haven’t been excited about a video like this in a really long time,” she said on a Taiwanese talk show recently, refusing to name the title of the fourth single off of Born This Way.

“The relation of the video to my real life, as well as to my dream of the future, is really what makes it so special,” she said on the show. “Part of what Born This Way is all about is choosing to live halfway between reality and fantasy at all times, and how anyone can do that. So this video really, really challenges that idea and also celebrates it. And it’s very exciting.

“I will also say that Yuyi is in incubation, for anyone who knows what that means,” she added, referring to the name she’s given to her mermaid alter ego that she first unveiled during her performance for France’s “Le Grand Journal” in June. “Yuyi may just be born in the next video.”

Gaga teased that her next single would surprise fans during a Twitter Q&A last week, leading to many a guessing game and wish list.

“I don’t want to ruin the surprise! It’s very unexpected. Working on the video now,” she said. “Next single coming in a bit.”

A rep for Gaga has not responded to MTV News’ request for comment regarding the next single.

‘Harry Potter’ Star Daniel Radcliffe: What’s Next?

Other than Broadway and the horror film ‘Woman in Black,’ Radcliffe is a free agent.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

The release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ may end a chapter for leading man Daniel Radcliffe, but that only means the rest of the entertainment world has opened up for him.

Up next, Radcliffe has the horror flick “The Woman in Black,” which he recently finished filming in the U.K. The story is markedly different from “Harry Potter,” with Radcliffe playing a grieving father investigating mysterious occurrences in a sleepy British town. The actor told MTV News that he is attracted to these sorts of dark tales because he finds something much more interesting about them.

“I don’t want to make a boring love story about two people who meet and then are happy. That’s boring, and that doesn’t exist,” Radcliffe explained. “I also do like playing slightly disenfranchised characters like Arthur is in ‘The Woman in Black.’ He’s someone who’s grieving and whose grief has put him to the edge of madness and also has sort of made him ostracize himself from society. I guess I like the dark stuff. I find it more interesting.”

So don’t expect a romantic comedy to be on Radcliffe’s list of projects to conquer. With his schedule packed for the next few months while he’s on Broadway performing in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” Radcliffe doesn’t have any other announced future-film commitments. But we expect once “The Woman in Black” hits theaters in January that Radcliffe will explore a variety of other genres.

That probably won’t include another “Potter”-sized franchise, though, the 21-year-old actor admitted.

“I think that we proved in doing ‘Potter’ that you can bring integrity and perpetual growth to a franchise. It doesn’t have to be a law of diminishing returns after the first film comes out,” Radcliffe told MTV News on the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ NYC red carpet. “Providing a script is good enough. I would absolutely do another, but it’s not something I’m looking for in the next couple of years, certainly.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.”

‘Harry Potter’ Box Office: How High Will It Go?

Film experts weigh in on how ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ blockbuster finale is likely to fare in the long run.
By Eric Ditzian

There was little doubt that when the “Harry Potter” franchise finally came to a close after a decade-long presence at the multiplex, it would do so in epically lucrative fashion. But only when “Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ actually began lighting up screens last Thursday at midnight did the true extent of its box-office power become clear: The film raked in a record $43.5 million at those early screenings and ended up shattering the three-day opening record of “The Dark Knight.”

“While I assumed it would have the best ‘Harry Potter’ debut of all time, I wasn’t quite sold on the fact that it could eclipse the ‘Dark Knight’ record, as none of the previous films, although highly successful, have ever approached that staggering number, despite having one of the most rabid fanbases filmdom has ever seen,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “This was monumental, as it seems everyone wanted to be a part of the discussion, everyone wanted to say goodbye to dear friends, and everyone wanted to experience the magic on the big screen one more time.”

But not everyone wanted that magical experience in 3-D. While “Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ benefited from the largest 3-D launch ever, according to Box Office Mojo, a majority of ticket buyers choose 2-D screenings, with just 43 percent of its total gross coming from 3-D screenings (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” by comparison, earned 60 percent of its opening gross from 3-D showings). So, although “Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ opening marks the second-biggest 3-D opening after “Alice in Wonderland,” the last “Potter” film wasn’t a 3-D must-see — it was a pop-culture must-see.

But insiders hardly predicted how intense the get-out-to-the-theater urge would be. Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com, pointed at social-networking sites as the key factor that raised awareness and drove ticket sales in the days leading up to release. The franchise’s Facebook page added 870,000 new “likes” last week and Twitter registered more than 225,000 tweets in that time frame. “It clearly showed that even casual fans of the series were excited about the last installment,” he said. “You can’t break records with just die-hard fans — you have to expand the base. That’s exactly what ‘Part 2′ did.”

Just don’t expect it to do what “Avatar” did. James Cameron’s sci-fi flick built slowly and stayed at the top of the box office for weeks. “Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” by contrast, experienced a hefty, 53 percent drop from Friday to Saturday, showing the film, like so many blockbusters before it, was a frontloaded theatrical event. While it will safely become the biggest movie of the summer, these wizards won’t be able to compete with Cameron’s big blue aliens, who drove “Avatar” to $2.8 billion worldwide.

“While the global grosses of ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ will likely be out of reach, expect ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ to become the third-highest grossing movie ever once it exits theaters, and surpasses ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King,’ which hauled in $1.1 billion worldwide, ” Bock said.

“Harry Potter,” then, is on the verge of unseating “Star Wars” to become the most lucrative franchise in movie history. While some franchises struggle to maintain early success (see this summer’s “Transformers” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” films), “Potter” has had no such problems. The example that Warner Bros. has set with its boy wizard is one that other studios wrapping up franchises would be wise to follow.

” ‘Potter’ fans grew up and didn’t abandon the series, but that could happen with ‘Twilight,’ ” Contrino said. “You have to mature at the same pace as your audience. The ‘Potter’ series grew darker and more compelling as its audience aged. It worked perfectly.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.”

Justin Bieber: I’m A Country Boy

The newly minted CMT Music Award winner says he shares his mother’s love of the country sound.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: The Insider

Before he took home the trophy for Collaborative Video of the Year at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday night, Justin Bieber professed his love for all things country on the red carpet.

“I’m really glad to be here,” he told CMT, with the guys of Rascal Flatts by his side. “It’s great.”

It wasn’t just an exciting night for him, but also for Mama Bieber, who happens to be a big country music aficionado. “It’s great; it’s so many people my mother admires, ’cause she loves country music, and I do too,” he continued. “So it’s really great to be here with Rascal Flatts.”

It was on the set for his winning video, “That Should Be Me,” that Bieber first cut his hair. In the end, the sacrifice of his trademark locks seemed worth it.

“Some of the fans liked it; some of the fans didn’t. They were just upset he cut it,” Bieber joked, nodding to Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox.

The video for “That Should Be Me,” a Never Say Never – The Remixes track (which was a reworked version of the song that first appeared on My World 2.0) is a lo-fi, behind-the-scenes, “making of the video” performance clip. But it was good enough to beat out the likes of country music superstars like Jason Aldean with Kelly Clarkson; Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow; Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow, as well as Aaron Lewis featuring George Jones and Charlie Daniels.

“First of all, I just want to say how honored I am to be here … with Rascal Flatts,” Bieber said while accepting his first country award. “How amazing are Rascal Flatts, everybody? I want to thank my mom. I want to thank my family. And I want to thank Rascal Flatts for even jumping on the song with me.”

Would you like to see Justin Bieber try out other genres of music? Talk about it in the comments!

Justin Bieber Doing NKOTB? Jim Jonsin Reveals Ideas

Producer says he would like to help Biebs channel New Kids on the Block, New Edition and Kelly Rowland.
By Rob Markman

Multi-platinum producer Jim Jonsin has some interesting plans for when he gets in the studio with Justin Bieber. No, he won’t be coupling the teen-pop sensation with B.o.B, but rather he will try to capture the vibe of NKOTB.

“For Bieber, I think I want to reach back to New Edition, those days,” Jonsin initially said before referencing another 1980s Boston-bred boy band. “I want to try to do something like that — ‘Please Don’t Go Girl,’ New Kids on the Block — because the girls would go crazy. Maybe not that song, but something that feels like that: little bit of soul, R&B, but pop as well.”

While the track pre-dates the 17-year-old Bieber by about four years, “Please Don’t Go Girl” was the first single from NKOTB’s sophomore album, Hangin’ Tough, and ultimately put the group on the map. The ballad, which featured Joey McIntyre as the lead vocalist, drew comparisons to New Edition’s 1983 single, “Is This the End” — not surprising considering both acts were founded and produced by Maurice Starr.

It isn’t all about the ’80s however: Jonsin also would like to produce something more modern for JB as well, using Kelly Rowland as a reference. “And then I’d love to put him on something like that ‘Motivation’ type of track,” he said of the hit Rowland single he helped create. “Just a hard beat that he could sing something super slick [on].”

Jonsin admits that, at first, he didn’t know what to make of Justin, but thanks to the Biebs’ “Never Say Never” film, the hitmaker has a newfound respect for the young star. “When I watched the movie with my 8-year-old daughter, I was floored and inspired at who he was as a person. He’s a good kid, he’s a philanthropist, he’s a good role model,” Jonsin said. “I have a newfound respect for the young man, and I’m honored to work with him.”

Who would you like to hear Justin Bieber channel on his next album? Share your ideas below!

Overeem out of Strikeforce HWT GP, but still fighting for Zuffa

Overeem out of Strikeforce HWT GP, but still fighting for ZuffaThe Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix has been very solid so far, but if there’s one complaint it might be the amount of time it’s taking to progress.

Zuffa, looking to speed things along, scheduled the semifinals for Sept. 10. Alistair Overeem says he can’t fight in September, so now in a surprising move, Zuffa has dumped him from the tournament.

It’s a shocking development, involving the guy who most still felt was the favorite to win the whole thing and eventually secure a fight with UFC champion Cain Velasquez down the road.

Instead, it’ll be Daniel Cormier who steps up and faces Antonio “Big Foot” Silva.

The story picked up steam this afternoon when Overeem appeared on AOL.com’s MMA Hour.

“What’s going to happen next? I don’t know. I’ve had some threats of cutting me out of the tournament if I don’t participate. I don’t know if they’re going to do it. Personally, I don’t like to be threatened. If people start talking like that then?be my guest, but then I’m really not going to sing to their tune,” Overeem said.

“For them to unilaterally declare, okay, [September 10] is going to be the second round, which I never agreed on, and then threaten me if I don’t want it, it?doesn’t really show a lot of respect,”

It was more than “a lack of respect,” there were actions behind the words. Overeem is out, but that doesn’t mean he’s getting booted from the Strikeforce roster. He’s the Strikeforce heavyweight champ and UFC president Dana White pointed out that Overeem’s still with the company.

“Sept. 10 was the date Showtime wants us to go, so it’s the date we’ve got to go. It’s unfortunate that Alistair is unavailable, but situations like this are why there are alternates in the tournament,” White told MMAjunkie. “Overeem is under contract, and when his pinky toe heals up, we’ll get him another fight,” White said.

‘Boyz N The Hood’ A ‘Coming-Of-Age Story,’ John Singleton Says

‘I knew Ice Cube was a movie star before he knew he was a movie star,’ director tells MTV News.

When John Singleton wrote and directed his 1991 film “Boyz n the Hood,” there was no grandiose cinematic inspiration or abstract muse. Instead, the Los Angeles native just wrote about what he knew best.

“My biggest influence for making the film was my friends, my friends growing up, and how Los Angeles was in the ’80s and ’90s,” Singleton told MTV News. “None of the movies that we saw growing up had anybody, any characters in them that were like us. So we were like, ‘We should make a movie about what we go through, about what we see.’ ”

Released on July 12, 1991, “Boyz n the Hood” was nominated for two Academy Awards and is hailed as a classic 20 years later. On July 19, the film will be re-released in Blu-ray. The movie’s impact doesn’t seem to surprise Singleton much; he kind of always knew things would turn out this way.

“I was like, ‘Wow if I can get this in a film, a little bit of what this is, that life on film, then I think I’ll have something that will have a hard effect on people,’ ” he recalled.

The film, starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, is set in South Central, Los Angeles, a California neighborhood notorious for gang violence. At the center of the film is Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who tries to balance his father’s (Fishburne) life lessons with the harsh realities of the ‘hood in which he lived. Then there are half-brothers Doughboy (Cube) and Ricky Baker (Chestnut), two characters who couldn’t be more different. Doughboy, a stone-cold gangster, has street respect but very few prospects. His brother Ricky, however, is a young father and a star high school football player fielding sports scholarships from multiple colleges. In the end, Ricky’s bright future is brought to a dark close when he’s gunned down in an alleyway.

Noted for its social message, “Boyz n the Hood” also marked the acting debut of rapper Ice Cube, who has gone on to star in movies like “Friday” with comedian Chris Tucker and “Anaconda” alongside Jennifer Lopez. Cube has also written, directed and produced a number of films as well. “I knew Ice Cube was a movie star before he knew he was a movie star,” Singleton said. “He just embodied that role and did a great job.”

In fact, the director had a vision — not just for Cube, but for all the members of his former group as well. “The script was originally written for all of N.W.A. The character Doughboy was always meant for Ice Cube, but the whole script was written for all of the N.W.A guys to be in it,” Singleton revealed.

Unfortunately, the casting didn’t go as planned, and years later, Dr. Dre expressed a bit of regret. “It’s funny, because when I told Dre that later on, he said, ‘Man, if you got any great ideas, you come to me again, you come to me,’ ” Singleton said with a chuckle.

When asked why he thought the film holds up after 20 years, John Singleton offered this: “I think people are still talking about ‘Boyz n the Hood’ because it’s part of who they are. Even if they’re not from that environment, they really identify with those characters. Ultimately, the movie is kind of like a teenage story, it’s a teenage coming-of-age movie. People watch that movie and say, ‘Wow, look at the journey of these characters,’ and then they think about their own journey.”

Lady Gaga? Britney Spears? Fans Pick Their 2011 Summer Jams

Katy Perry, Pitbull, Chris Brown and Adele also found support from MTV.com readers.

Now that school’s out and folks are slathering on the sunscreen, we figured it was time to take the temperature of the annual Summer Jam Sweepstakes — the race to dominate the airwaves (and your tanning playlist) during the long, hot months of the year.

So last week, we published our initial rankings in the race for the Summer Jam crown, a list that was topped by Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” with Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” following close behind. A whole host of other big-name stars — like Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Adele, to name just a few — also made the cut, along with some dark-horse candidates (like Foster the People, Maroon 5 and David Guetta) who are determined to make this competition close.

Of course, our rankings had you talking too — in fact, the conversation in our comments section got so huge (we even heard from a Hall of Fame third baseman!) that we’ve decided to spotlight some of the best back-and-forth right now. What’s your pick for the Song of Summer 2011? Here’s what you had to say:

“This has been Katy’s decade so far! She made pop music fun again.” — Tuffy Luvvy

” ‘Lighters’ by Eminem, Royce and Bruno Mars all the way, baby! It’s a long-shot, I know. I think Katy Perry will get it, but you never know.” — lilbittaflava

“I like Katy, but ‘I Wanna Go’ from Britney sounds more like a summer song.” — Aaron

“Britney Spears! ‘I Wanna Go’ just makes my summer great!” — Melissa Goulart

“Britney Spears all the way! ‘I Wanna Go’ all the way! I’m still in love with Pitbull’s ‘Give Me Everything,’ and his album is amazing. Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ is sick, love it!” — RyanJaggerz

” ‘The Edge of Glory’ is a glorious pop anthem-masterpiece, no need for it to be crowned as a ‘jam.’ Adele’s ‘Rolling’ is heart-touching, breathtaking and also a masterpiece.” — Spyros Venturis

” ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera is amazing!” — SuperZonic Jbsz

“Oh I couldn’t believe when I saw them, thank you so much MTV for putting them on the list … I love them, talking about of course FOSTER THE PEOPLE YEAHHHHHHH.” — hotalejandro

” ‘Tonight Tonight’ by Hot Chelle Rae! I could party to that every day of the summer.” — WhatShouldIDo?

“You guys forgot about New Boyz ft. Chris Brown, ‘Better With the Lights Off,’ and Lupe Fiasco ft. Trey Songz, ‘Outta My Head.’ ” — booklady

“All these songs have that ‘I’ve heard it all before’ sound to them. Nothing special about any of the songs on the list. A lot of the ‘artists’ on this list would be better off working a mop at a Waffle House. It’s Kanye’s fault.” — Mike Schmidt

UFC 132 openers: Njokuani shreds Winner on the feet ? Hougland, Bowles and Simpson also victors

UFC 132 openers: Njokuani shreds Winner on the feet ? Hougland, Bowles and Simpson also victors

LAS VEGAS – In what could’ve been his final fight with the UFC, Anthony Njokuani came up with a clutch effort.

The Nigerian-born muay thai specialist got back on the winning track by dominating Andre Winner in a 15-minute standup battle. Njokuani lit up Winner in the first round on his way to a unanimous decision win, 30-26, 30-26 and 30-27. The victory ensures Njokuani keeps his job with the UFC.

“I have a newborn son (Kai) now and it’s really opened up my eyes and made me focus harder. I go in the gym every day and try to watch tape and improve on what I’ve done wrong in other fights. I’m trying to do the little things well. I keep my hands up, I move my head more. I think that showed tonight,” said Njokuani.

Njokuani (14-5, 1-1 UFC) came in a loser in three-of-four. His last fight was a tight decision loss against Edson Barboza. He had to make sure the judges saw it his way tonight.

Njokuani came out with a blistering pace using leg kicks and counterpunches to really throw Winner off his game. With 1:15 left in the first, the Brit got a little sloppy when he tried to come inside. Njokuani rocked him with a right uppercut and a short left. Winner backed up, but his legs didn’t cooperate. His plant leg was jello. Winner retreated to the cage where he absorbed 30-plus knees and punches. Referee Yves Lavigne showed a lot of self-control in allowing the fight to continue and Winner (11-6-1, 2-4 UFC) made it out of the round. Two of three judges scored it a 10-8 round for Njokuani.

“I thought he was gonna be (knocked) out there in the first round. He survived and proved that he’s a tough dude,” said Njokuani.

Winner, the runner up on Season 9 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” has now lost three straight. He’s got some of the quickest hands in the lightweight division, but too often he’s a slow starter. Njokuani’s length hurt him from the start.

“It took too long for me to get going tonight. I was too tense and didn’t use my range. He was a good puncher, but I spar with guys like Paul Daley so I’m use to hard shots,” Winner said. “Anthony was just better tonight in all aspects. He’s a great technician.”

Simpson roughs up Tavares in battle of dirty boxing

Brad Tavares can definitely hang with a top wrestler, but that wasn’t enough to lock up a win against veteran Aaron Simpson.

Tavares stayed off his back, but couldn’t consistently create space to make good on a striking advantage. Simpson, 36, worked the fight to the cage for most of the 15 minutes and rolled to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards.

“I’m going to be honest. I didn’t think I was at my best tonight. Brad is very talented and he has very flexible hips. Some guys at 185 are easy to hold down and maneuver. He felt heavy and was strong and made it a tough fight,” Simpson said. “This win is something to build off of. I have such good training with guys like Seth Baczynski, Robbie Lawler, CB (Dolloway) and (Ryan) Bader. It truly made the difference in there.”

According to FightMetric, Simpson was good on just 2-of-15 takedown attempts, but outlanded Tavares 127-41.

Simpson (9-2, 6-2 UFC) opened with a solid first round. The former Arizona State wrestler couldn’t get it to the ground, but was able to land the harder shots in side.

In the second, Tavares (7-1, 2-1 UFC) got off to quick start with a left hook that briefly put Simpson on his rear end, but the wrestler was able to clinch and move it to the cage. The fighters traded knees and punches from the clinch over the next two and half minutes. Tavares picked Simpson off the ground and scored a huge slam. Again Simpson refused to freak out, won the scramble and threatened for choke with head control for the next minute. It was more of the same in the final round with Simpson winning the inside exchanges.

“I’m disappointed I lost the fight. I just spoke with my coaches and know I did some things wrong,” said the 23-year-old Tavares. “I’m not going to hang my head for long. I actually wish my gym was open tomorrow. I’m ready to get back in there and fix some things.”

Less than aggressive Bowles gets by Mizugaki

Brian Bowles began the slow climb back to the top of the 135-pound tonight by taking out the very tough Takeya Mizugaki.

Bowles, the former WEC bantamweight champ, battling back from a myriad of hand injuries, got the unanimous decision, 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27. Bowles is now 2-0 in the UFC. He scored his first victory with the big boy promotion over Damacio Page.

Tonight wasn’t easy for Bowles, who used a cautious approach to beat the Japanese veteran to the punch on most occasions in the first. In the second and third, Bowles (10-1, 2-0 UFC) used his grappling to win over the judges.

A native of Georgia, Bowles crushed Mizugaki (14-6-2, 1-1 UFC) with a big right at the 2:02 mark of the second. Mizugaki went down in a heap, Bowles jumped on top and eventually took his back. Mizugaki was in deep trouble. Bowles had a tight body triangle and began working for the choke. Mizugaki must have some super strong hands because hand battled with Bowles the rest of the way and never found himself in serious danger of being choked.

In the final round, Mizugaki fought without a sense of urgency. He allowed Bowles to take his back standing and then jump on top of him. With Mizugaki leaning against the cage, Bowles remained on his back for nearly four minutes.

Update: Bowles told UFC.com that he felt like he broke his right hand in the second. That certainly explains why his punch output was down to just 111 punches thrown.

In fight No. 1, Jeff Hougland and Donny Walker engaged in a back and forth battle. Hougland took a unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28. It was the UFC debut for both fighters.

Lady Gaga Visits the “Howard Stern Show”

Up bright and early for her much-awaited interview, Lady Gaga headed from her New York City hotel to Sirius studios for an appearance on the Howard Stern Show on Monday morning (July 18).

Once again clad in an all-black leather ensemble, the “Judas” singer was doted with a bouquet of flowers from one of her adoring fans before heading inside to chat with the high-profile radio host.

Prior to the interview, Gaga’s millions of “little monsters” were on Twitter in full force – many of whom offered up warnings to Stern that he’d better not be mean to their beloved singer.

Of the overwhelming tweets pouring in, Howard’s official show Twitter account posted a message in response reading: “Some of @ladygaga ‘s Little Monsters r threatening 2 harm 2 Howard if he’s mean 2 her. Howard feels he’s being threatened by the drama club”

Nonetheless, things ended up going quite smoothly, with the most talked about moment of the visit happened as Gaga said that her on/off beau Luc Carl will be involved in one of her upcoming video projects, as she told, “Luc Carl is my best friend and he is going to be in my video.”

Gaga also played a few snippets of new material before wrapping things up and heading out to continue with the day’s agenda.
